DAN Diving Safety Laboratory

DAN (Divers Alert Network) is the worlds leading diver safety organisation and in conjunction with UWATEC, have agreed to jointly set up a permanent research laboratory - the DAN - UWATEC Diving Safety Laboratory (DSL) - with the aim of examining all the relevant factors which may influence diver safety. This project will collect information on all forms of diving and diving accidents, with an emphasis on decompression illness, very much in a similar way to Project Safe Dive, but with the possibility of examining a number of situations where potential problems are believed to exist.

As a result of the DSL research conducted in conjunction with DAN, the Smart dive computers feature six easy to set adjustment levels to each dive profile for microbubble suppression. The research indicated an increase in microbubble production on repetitive dives resulting in a recommendation for new ascent behavior with level stops for all dive profiles. Research determined a 37% incidence of microbubble production on all the monitored dives and, more significantly, a 67% incidence of microbubbles on repetitive dives. Of the six microbubble suppression levels the diver can select from level 0, which is the standard setting with no suppression, to level 5, where there is maximum suppression and the most possible safety. Experiments with level stops were proven to reduce microbubbles by up to 61% and in some cases eliminate them entirely.

The success of this ambitious project depends on the participation of divers who are prepared to provide the DSL researchers with accurate information by correctly filling in the research questionnaires and by carrying with them, during their dives, the DSL Black Box dive recorders. These divers will be under the discrete supervision of the DSL Bases and the Research Operators.
